Direct Instruction Spoken English (DISE): English Language Development Curriculum for Functional Mastery of Spoken English
Educational Achievement Publishing (EAP) is the proud publisher of Direct Instruction Spoken English (DISE)—a research-based program proven to accelerate English language development and build long-term academic success.
Do These Challenges Sound Familiar?
Multilingual Learners (MLLs) who
cannot access content-area curriculum and instruction due to low English language levels?
have difficulty hearing sounds that are not in their primary language?
apply the phonological rules of their primary language to English, which impedes the acquisition of English reading skills?
try to generate sentences that follow the same word-order rules as their primary language, which impedes their acquisition of English speaking and writing skills?
We Have a Solution!
Direct Instruction Spoken English (DISE) is a two-level sequence that teaches functional mastery of the English language. DISE is not a literacy program. Instead, it focuses on the oral language skills that create the foundation for success in reading and all content areas.
Level 1
Prepares students who have little or no knowledge of English.
Includes 100 lessons, requiring 90 minutes of daily instruction.
All instruction is delivered in English, so teachers do not need to know students’ primary languages.
Groups may include students who speak different primary languages.
Level 2
A progressive continuation of Level 1 includes 80 lessons, requiring 50 minutes of daily instruction. Students learn over 500 new words and model sentences that illustrate correct grammatical structure.
Level 2 focuses on using a wider variety of sentence forms, including past, present, and future tenses.
Vocabulary and sentence structures are taught within both social and academic contexts to prepare students for different situations.
What Makes Authentic Direct Instruction and DISE Different from Other Programs?
Every element is intentionally designed to accelerate learning and ensure lasting mastery:
Accurate Placement: Students start at their instructional level—no frustration, no boredom.
Explicit Teaching: Concepts are presented explicitly. Teachers model every concept clearly and consistently.
Active Student Engagement: Frequent responses and group unison responses keep students engaged and accountable.
Immediate Feedback: Errors are corrected on the spot, which prevents the practice of mistakes and promotes mastery.
Mastery Focus: Lessons advance only when students demonstrate firm understanding. New content is introduced in small, carefully sequenced steps to ensure success and mastery.
Efficient Routines: Every instructional minute counts, so highly structured routines maximize instructional minutes
Field-Tested Scripts: Every word and example is research-based and classroom-validated for clarity, pacing, and effectiveness. Scripts reduce ambiguity, ensuring all teachers present content with precision.
Data-Driven Decisions: Intermittent mastery checks, along with formative data collected daily, are used to guide pacing, grouping, and reteaching.
